Station Master (SM) is in charge of railway station operations, including train movements, passenger amenities, and overall station management.

 




Responsibilities of a Station Master :-

1.     Train Operations Management: Ensuring safe arrival, departure, and movement of trains within station limits.

2.     Signal and Track Management: Coordinating with signal operators and track staff for smooth operations.

3.     Passenger Assistance: Handling queries, grievances, and providing necessary passenger support.

4.     Safety Measures: Ensuring all safety protocols are followed to avoid accidents.

5.     Supervision of Station Staff: Managing booking clerks, porters, and other station employees.

6.     Handling Emergency Situations: Taking quick action in case of accidents or technical failures.

7.     Revenue Collection: Overseeing ticket sales and station earnings.

 

Other Responsibilities :-

A. Operational Management :-

        Monitor train schedules, delays, and platform assignments.

        Coordinate with signal staff, guards, and control rooms for smooth operations.

        Manage freight and passenger train movements.


B. Safety & Compliance :-

        Enforce safety protocols (e.g., track clearance, signal adherence).

        Handle emergencies like accidents, derailments, or medical crises.


C. Administrative Duties :-

        Supervise station staff and resources (tickets, equipment).

        Maintain records (logbooks, incident reports).

        Ensure station cleanliness and security.

D. Passenger Interaction :-

       Resolve complaints, provide information, and manage crowd control.

 

Salary & Allowances :-

The salary of a Station Master is determined as per 7th Pay Commission and falls under Pay Level 6 in the Indian Railways pay matrix.

1.     Eligibility: Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university.

2.     Recruitment Process :-

o    Exam Conducted by: Railway Recruitment Board (RRB)

o    Selection Stages:

§  Computer-Based Test (CBT - 2 stages)

§  Aptitude Test

§  Document Verification & Medical Test

3.     Training: Selected candidates undergo training at Zonal Training Institutes.

 

Career Growth & Promotion :-

  • Assistant Station Master (ASM) → Station Master (SM) → Station Superintendent (SS) → Divisional Operations Manager (DOM) → Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Sr. DOM)
